ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026: How Nigerian Startups Can Apply
Startups across West Africa now have an opportunity to compete for a share of $65,000 in cash prizes under the second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards.
The initiative, organised by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is designed to recognise promising businesses developing innovative solutions while encouraging digital entrepreneurship, technological advancement and stronger economic cooperation across the region.
The programme is open to startups from ECOWAS member states, including Nigeria.
Applications for the 2026 edition opened on August 3, 2026, and interested startups must submit their applications by August 31, 2026.
What Is the ECOWAS Startup Awards?
The ECOWAS Startup Awards is a regional programme created to identify innovative startups with the potential to contribute to economic development in West Africa.
Beyond the financial rewards, the programme gives participating businesses opportunities to gain exposure outside their home countries, connect with investors and engage with other entrepreneurs, policymakers and development organisations.
The 2026 programme is the second edition of the awards. The first edition was held in Niamey, Niger, in November 2021.
Sectors Covered by the 2026 Startup Awards
The programme is expected to select 60 startups from the 12 participating ECOWAS member states.
Businesses operating in the following sectors are eligible to participate:
- EdTech and Skills Development
- FinTech
- HealthTech
- AgriTech and Food Systems
- CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation
- Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech
Startups developing technology-driven solutions within these areas are therefore encouraged to consider applying.
ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026 Prizes and Benefits
The competition provides financial rewards for the leading startups. The prizes include:
- First runner-up: $20,000
- Second runner-up: $15,000
In addition to the cash awards, selected participants can gain access to several opportunities that could help them grow their businesses.
These include increased visibility across ECOWAS member countries, opportunities to meet potential investors through dedicated deal rooms, and networking opportunities involving entrepreneurs, government representatives, policymakers and development partners.
Successful startups will also have access to a six-month acceleration and mentorship programme following the awards.
Participants may further receive digital resources, including computers, accessories and software, to support their operations and continued development.

The programme will therefore combine online learning and preparation with an in-person event in Abuja before the final stage of the competition.
Eligibility for Nigerian Startups
Nigerian entrepreneurs interested in the ECOWAS Startup Awards should review the official eligibility requirements carefully before submitting an application.
Applicants should ensure that their startup falls within one of the six programme sectors and that they meet all applicable conditions specified by the organisers.
Because eligibility requirements can be updated by the organisers, prospective applicants should confirm the current requirements directly on the official application platform before completing their submission.
How to Apply for the ECOWAS Startup Awards
Applications are submitted online through the ECOWAS Startup Awards application platform.
Interested applicants should first create an account using their full name, email address, telephone number and a password of at least 10 characters. Although the telephone number is optional, applicants are encouraged to provide it.
After creating an account, applicants can access their dashboard and begin a new application.
The application form is divided into Sections A through J. Applicants do not necessarily have to complete everything in one sitting, as the platform allows an application to be saved as a draft and completed later.

Applicants should carefully check all information entered into the form before final submission.
How Startups Will Be Selected
The selection process will take place in two major stages.
During the national selection stage, each participating ECOWAS member state will nominate part of its allocated startups, while the remaining places will be filled through applications submitted by the public.
Startups that make it through the selection process will advance to the regional finals in Abuja.
At the final stage, shortlisted entrepreneurs will pitch their businesses before an independent panel comprising industry professionals, investors and relevant policy stakeholders.
ECOWAS Startup Awards Evaluation Criteria
Applications and pitches will be assessed using several criteria designed to determine the strength and potential of each startup.
The scoring structure includes:
- Problem clarity and solution fit: 20%
- Innovation and originality: 20%
- Team capacity and ability to execute: 15%
- Market potential and scalability: 10%
- Business model and financial viability: 10%
- Social and economic impact: 10%
- Alignment with ECOWAS priorities: 10%
- Pitch, online voting and data integrity: 5%
This means applicants should not focus solely on having an innovative idea. They should also be able to demonstrate that their team can execute the idea, that there is a viable market for the solution and that the business can generate meaningful social or economic impact.
Why Nigerian Startups Should Consider Applying
For startups with ambitions to expand beyond Nigeria, the ECOWAS Startup Awards could provide more than just an opportunity to win funding.
The programme can potentially expose participating businesses to investors, regional partners and other founders while giving them an opportunity to showcase their solutions on a broader West African platform.
With the combination of financial prizes, mentorship, acceleration, networking and regional exposure, the programme may be particularly valuable to startups that are already developing solutions with the potential to scale across multiple African markets.
Nigerian startups that meet the requirements should therefore consider submitting their applications before the August 31, 2026 deadline.
