The Opportunity
- As the Environmental Compliance & Safety Assistant, you will be responsible for overseeing LSM program compliance with United States Government (USG) and local environmental regulations, and program adherence to requirements as laid out in USAID Programmatic and Supplemental Environmental Assessments and amendments, and compliance with the PMI IRS Best Management Practices Manual in 11 wards of Argungu LGA in Kebbi State.
- Under the supervision of the Technical Manager, she/he will be responsible for Larval Source Management activities detailed below.
- This employment is for a fixed term of 12 months. This position is located in Argungu, Kebbi State.
Project Description
- The PMI Evolve Project supports the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID to plan and implement an integrated vector control strategy with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria while promoting equity to sustain malaria gains.
- Abt has implemented integrated vector control for PMI since 2011, delivering high-quality indoor residual spraying (IRS), technical assistance for insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution and durability monitoring, and new approaches for larval source management (LSM). Additionally, Abt’s PMI-funded work manages the most comprehensive malaria vector entomological surveillance programs in 21 African countries to inform malaria vector control trends, strategies, and impact.
- Under the PMI Evolve Project, Abt will further its delivery of integrated vector control programs by partnering with local communities, organizations, and governments to co-design and co-implement tailored malaria vector control programs. The end goal is fighting malaria while strengthening local capacity to sustain malaria gains.
Core Responsibilities
- Ensure environmental compliance procedures and best practices in waste management, inventory management, vehicle inspections and Pre-Season Environmental Compliance Assessment
- Participate in the training of community vector control technicians and community mosquito collectors.
- Provide technical assistance to LSM implementation teams and counterparts.
- Ensure the timely preparation of LSM reports.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a minimum of direction and supervision.
- Ensure safe working procedure during larval source management activities.
- Ensure appropriate and timely disposal/recycle of solid waste generated during LSM activity.
- Lead routine environmental assessments and store preparation and support the routine environmental monitoring.
- Supervise and perform routine inspection of LSM activity implementation, safe storage, use, and disposal of larvicides.
- Performs additional tasks as may be assigned from time to time by supervisors.
What We Value
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma plus 4 years relevant experience or Bachelor’s Degree plus 2 years relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant workplace experience, or master’s degree with a minimum of 1 years’ experience in Environmental Compliance, Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or other relevant field.
- Demonstrated ability to work both as a member of a team and as a team leader, with the ability to accept the inputs of other team members.
- Demonstrates leadership and teamwork and produces high quality work in a timely, cost-effective manner and has excellent writing skills.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal communication and computer skills.
- Fluency in designing and deploying digital tools is highly desirable. Experience with USAID and donor projects is highly desirable.
- English language proficiency.
- Some experience in environmental compliance and insecticide use and management.
- Experience working in close partnership with government stakeholders, local community leaders, and partner organizations with an emphasis on capacity strengthening and skills transfer.
- Two years of successful training and coaching experience in a field environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a minimum of direction and supervision.
